Ames Model 1840 Light Artillery Saber, Dated 1862 Connecticut Surcharge - Inventory Number:  SWO 248 / SOLD

Model 1840 Light Artillery Saber manufactured by Ames Manufacturing Company of Chicopee, Massachusetts in 1862. The ricasso has the Ames maker’s mark in scroll on one side and “CONN / 1862” for the State of Connecticut. The blade is bright with very light, scattered pitting and a few nicks along the edge. The brass guard is semi-bright with areas of mellowing patina and has two rack numbers “66” stamped into it that correspond to patching numbers on the scabbard throat. The leather grip is moderately worn, complete with twisted brass wire wrap which is just slightly loose. The scabbard is in good condition with a rough, brown patina overall and areas of light rust. A fine example with a scarce Connecticut surcharge.
