Ames Model 1860 Cavalry Saber, Dated 1860 - Inventory Number:  SWO 228 / SOLD

Model 1860 cavalry saber made by Ames Manufacturing Company of Chicopee Massachusetts in 1860. This 1860-dated saber stands a very good chance of having been carried by a Virginia Confederate cavalryman. Of approximately 1,400 made that year and delivered to the U.S. government between mid-February and Jan 11, 1861, 1,200 were forwarded to Virginia at the direction of U.S. Secretary of War, and native Virginian, John B. Floyd. The ricasso bears the very clear Ames maker’s mark and date. The blade has developed a scattered, light brown patina with areas of light rust and some nicks along the edge. The brass guard retains an uncleaned brass patina with a bent down quillon. The pommel has a number of old, heavy dings, as if it was struck with a hammer. The leather grip is in good condition but is missing the wire wrap. The original leather washer is intact around the ricasso. The scabbard is in very good condition and has developed a pleasing, medium brown patina. A well-used, early dated Ames saber that could have easily seen Confederate use.
