Artillery Pass Box – Inventory Number: ART 426
Pass boxes were used by a gunner to carry artillery shells from the limber to the piece, keeping it dry and secure. This is a 11" example, likely for the siege mortars and similar large bore guns. This is only the second example we have encountered in over 30 years. There is the remains of a paper label with faded ink inscription. Likely an attribution to a battlefield. This leather box is cylinder shaped and has a leather sling as a handle. Box measures 15 ¾ high x 11” in circumference. Lid measures 11” across.
