Artillery Water Bucket - Inventory Number: ART 404 / SOLD
Also referred to as the sponge bucket: Made of sheet iron, this bucket measured 9-inches high and 8-inches in diameter. A wooden coverhttp://www.civilwarartillery.com/equipment/images/USSpongeBucket.jpg was attached to the opening and was connected to the handle by two rings and a chain. A toggle bolt was fastened to the handle by two links and a swivel. This allowed the bucket to be attached to the eye of the axle strap on the carriage. The sponge bucket held water for dipping the sponge-head into when washing out the cannon tube to remove debris and extinguish the embers of the previous round fired.
The top and bottom both have a re-enforced iron band riveted in place. Attached to the top of the bucket by a chain is a circular lid made of wood with an iron spine running across it at center. The edges of the spine extend past the wood and allow the lid to lock in place. Attached to the top is a heavy iron arched handle with short chain. The body appears to have been repainted with black paint which is the correct color. There are no holes or dents only some light surface rust and dirt from age. Scarce implement.
