Beauregard, Pierre Gustave Toutant Autographed Letter Signed. One page, Quarto, in pencil, Asheville, December 7, 1861. This brief letter, written in pencil, is directed to Colonel Duncan K. McRae, an ornery Confederate soldier. In part: "Your letter...-was received only yesterday and my occupations have prevented me from answering before this moment. I am happy to state that since you joined my com-mand... you have borne yourself in a soldierly manner & discharged all the duties instructed to you with zeal & intelligence, and evinced an energetic disposition to master all the duties of your office, in which position...you have given general Satisfaction & I would be happy to hear of your promotion to a higher grade. G.T.B. "McRae was a controversial figure, whose jealous nature forced him to resign from the Army. When his General was killed in action, McRae took command of the brigade, but his junior officer was promoted above him. McRae submitted his resignation a week later, and served the Confederate government instead in Europe. An extremely attractive piece, clean and fresh and perfect for prominent display. Worthy of the finest Civil War collection!
