Also known as an eprouvette, this device was designed to test the quality and power of gunpowder. The brass barrel was filled with a measured quantity of powder and ignited through the vent at the top, and the expanding gasses would push against the numbered brass wheel. The barrel is screwed into a walnut grip. This example measures 7 inches in length and likely dates to the first quarter of the 19th century.
