Canteen from the Battlefield of Gettysburg - Inventory Number: CAN 070 / Sold

Awesome battlefield picked up example of the model 1858 smoothside canteen made from the Cincinnati depot with tin spout.   The body of the canteen boasts an ornate silver plaque engraved “Gettysburg July 3 1863”.

Spout is carved with the soldier's initials "J.K.B."  A portion of the original leather sling remains.  This scarce sling was used up until  mid-1862, most federal canteen slings were made of leather, fitted with a tin buckle and protector (which was a “lip” of leather underneath the tin buckle, apparently made to protect the uniform or clothing from rust or staining).

A wonderful original relic from the Gettysburg Battlefield.
