Civil War Carbine Cleaning Brush With Rod - This cavalry carbine cleaning brush device is an excellent example of an implement or tool used to clean out the barrel bore of breechloading carbines during the war. It was carried by most Federal cavalrymen. It consists of a 6 1/8” long, cylindrical brush connected to a brass ferrule that secures to a 29” long wood rod. The brush has stiff circular bristles that would scour the barrel bore when the leather tong was dropped down the breech and then pulled outward from the muzzle. This cleaning brush is a fine representative specimen of Union cavalry equipment.
