Cased Civil War B-Flat Baritone Sax Horn - Inventory Number: MUS 139 / SOLD

Some of the most important social activities in the mid-19th Century were performances from community music ensembles. Around the time of the American Civil War the ensembles were often brass bands. The saxhorn being the most common brass instrument in these American Civil War bands. The over-the-shoulder variety of the instrument was used, as the backward-pointing bell of the instrument allowed troops marching behind the band to hear the music.

This wonderful original example is constructed of brass and silver and had been professionally tuned into playing condition.  The horn measures 29” tall and 14” wide with a bell diameter of 9 ½”. The valves function flawlessly as do the tuning and valve slides.  It is accompanied by its original mouthpiece and two additional antique mouthpieces for playing.  The horn is complete with its original wood case and a nearly identical reproduction case which was made for reenactments and storage.  The original case retains a wool lining in the lid and most of the salmon-colored polished cotton body liner with some wear and tears but overall sound.   The reproduction case is superbly constructed with a padded lining and skeleton key lock with a pair of functional keys. Beautiful example!
