Civil War 1863 Sharps Carbine -   Inventory Number:  RIF 206

The most famous, single-shot, percussion firearm used during the Civil War was the Sharps carbine, a .52 caliber, breechloading firearm invented and patented by Hartford, Connecticut native Christian Sharps.

Excellent condition New Model 1863 Sharp’s Carbine, serial # C, 28477. Carbine has a 21½” long round barrel and a ‘straight-breech’ type lockplate fitted to its walnut stock and forend. The right side of the receiver is stamped “C. SHARPS PAT. / OCT 5TH 1852” and towards the top “R.S. LAWRENCE PAT / APRIL 12TH 1852”. On the breech end of the blued barrel is stamped “NEW MODEL 1863”. On the left side of the receiver is stamped “C. SHARPS PAT. / SEPT. 12th 1848”. The rear sight is stamped “LAWRENCE  / PATENTED / FEB 15TH 1859”. Barrel address strong with “SHARPS RIFLE / MANUFG CO. / HARTFORD, CONN” in front of rear sight.  Nice patina with much original finish. Stock is hand carved with crossed sabers. During the Civil War the Union armed eighty regiments with Sharps percussion carbines. They proved well suited for testing an enemy’s strength, slowing advances, picking off officers.
