Historically Inscribed Model 1850 Foot Officer’s Sword Presented to Lt. Wm. R. Shafter 7th Michigan Infantry Medal of Honor Recipient - Inventory Number: SWO 307
A remarkable and historically significant Model 1850 Foot Officer’s Sword, inscribed:
“Presented to LT. Wm. R. Shafter by Co. I, 7th Michigan Inf USA.”
This regulation U.S. officer’s sword features a classic 31-inch slightly curved blade with a single fuller and elegantly etched military motifs, though fading consistent with age and use may be present. The spine of the blade is marked “Emons & Marshall, Philadelphia”, noted sword dealers during the Civil War era. No scabbard is present, though the sword would have originally been housed in a leather scabbard with brass mounts.
This presentation sword was given to Lt. William Rufus Shafter, a notable figure in American military history who served with distinction in the 7th Michigan Infantry during the Civil War. Shafter was later awarded the Medal of Honor for gallantry in action at the Battle of Fair Oaks, Virginia, on May 31, 1862. His long military career eventually led him to command U.S. forces during the Spanish-American War, including the famous campaign in Cuba.
This sword is documented in reference works including Richard Bezdek’s American Swords and Sword Makers (page 231), and Volume 19 of the “Record of Service of Michigan Volunteers in the Civil War, 1861–1865” (Brown Book Set), page 80.
A truly rare artifact combining military, personal, and national significance—worthy of inclusion in any advanced Civil War or Medal of Honor-related collection.
Condition: Blade retains crisp spine marking and visible inscription; etching moderately worn from age. No scabbard present. Grip and guard show appropriate wear with untouched patina. A historically important presentation sword with documented provenance.
