Unique Civil War period match tin and candle set, intended to be portable for writing letters or reading in camp. The tin box is painted dark blue with a floral design on the lid. The lid opens to reveal an interior compartment for matches with a hinged lid with sandpaper adhered to the surface for striking. A separate space in the container holds a small candle. The side of the main tin folds down to serve as a candle stick (the round tin candle holder has separated from the solder.) The container measures 2 ¾” by 1 ¾” and is ½” deep. This would be a handy little lighting device for a Civil War soldier.
