Civil War Era Dip Pen and Case - Inventory Number: PER 349 / SOLD

Beautiful dip pen manufactured by Marbie, Todd & Company. One of the longest-lived makers of writing equipment, Mabie Todd was a firm whose partners' involvement in gold nib and pencil manufacture dated back to the 1840s. Mabie, Todd & Co. itself was established in 1860 in New York City. The company was reformed as Mabie Todd & Bard in 1873. This is a wonderful example with mother of pearl handle and a decorative copper nib holder. The nib is a modern replacement. The velvet lined leatherette case is in excellent condition, with both brass closure hooks intact and “Marbie, Todd & Co. Makers” printed on the cover in gold ink.
