Civil War Era Parade Torch / Oil Lamp - This 5 1/2" x 4" round tin canister with wick holder is attached to a pole or handle that measures 47 3/8" for carrying it during nighttime political parades or rallies of the mid-19th century. This piece has been painstakingly preserved and still features the original wick. During political campaigns from the Civil War era up to 1900, night parades were very popular. It was cooler at night, people were off from work, and it was quite a spectacle to behold. The heyday of night parades was between the 1860s to 1890s. A neat piece of American political history. Was purchased from an estate local to Gettysburg.
