Civil War-Era Picket Bullet Mold - Inventory Number: FIR 194 / SOLD
This original iron bullet mold is designed for casting picket-style bullets, a distinctive conical projectile used with various percussion rifles. Typically employed with target or sporting rifles, picket bullets were known for their aerodynamic shape and improved accuracy over round balls.
The mold consists of two hand-forged iron arms joined with a rivet-style hinge, featuring a cylindrical cavity visible at the mold’s top for pouring molten lead. Once cooled, the mold would be opened to release the finished projectile. Compact and utilitarian, this tool reflects the essential self-sufficiency of 19th-century shooters who often cast their own ammunition.
This mold is a fine example of pre-industrial ammunition tooling and remains in good condition with smooth action and light surface oxidation consistent with age. A rare and authentic piece of firearms history, ideal for collectors of Civil War relics, early American gunsmithing tools, or black powder accessories.
