Civil War Oval Tin Snuff Container - Patented 1860, convex top and bottom, with soldered seam construction. Measures approximately 3 1/8"
x 2 1/8". Most of the jappaned finish has worn off, light rust in the interior. Patent date die stamped on front, "PAT.d Jan 24, 1860". Throughout the Civil War snuff production boomed. It was even recommended by doctors as a general cure-all, particularly effective in the treatment of coughs, colds, and headaches. Many soldiers carried snuff in their haversacks.
