Civil War Martingale Plate - Inventory Number: CAV 065 / SOLD

Civil War officer’s heart-shaped plate worn on the center of the martingale on the horse’s chest. The plate measures about 3” by 2 ¾” and is constructed of stamped brass with lead fill and was affixed to the martingale with three iron rivets. The plate has a slick brown patina and a few bends and chips along the edge. Excavated near Winchester, Virginia. Similar examples can be seen on page 82 of Excavated Artifacts from Battlefields and Campsites of the Civil War 1861-1865 by Stanley S. Phillips. A nice example of a seldom encountered Civil War plate.

Comes housed in a display case with red velvet backing and descriptive card.
