Civil War Saber Knot - Inventory Number: LEA 441 / SOLD

Issued to Union horsemen during the Civil War. The 1” wide, black bridle leather device is looped upon itself each side forming a 17 ½”  long, strong leather wrist loop with “E. Gaylord Chicopee Mass” stamped into the body. The body is secured by two sliding leather loops and features a plaited full set of thin cut tassels at one end.

As part of the cavalry trooper’s equipment during battle, the knot was secured to the sword hilt and then looped around the cavalryman’s wrist. Its purpose was to enable the combatant to retain possession of his edged weapon should he receive a blow that knocked the blade from his grip.

These original, black bridle leather sword knots are becoming increasingly difficult to obtain today. An addition to any leather collection or Federal cavalry display.
