Civil War Surgical Amputation Kit Inscribed to Surgeon with Autograph Album - Inventory Number: MED 202 / SOLD
Three tier surgical amputation set by Helmold of Philadelphia which started in 1850. This deluxe case with reinforced corners bears a gold gilded brass plaque with jeweler engraved plaque which reads: “George G. Carill M.D.”. The case is three tiered containing a variety of implements such as: Amputation saw, tourniquet, trephining saw, metacarpal saws, tenaculum, scalpels and suturing needles. The tourniquet does show some dark staining consistent with its use. There are several instruments missing including scissors and gnawing forceps. The original lining is a brilliant red with very minor wear. The instruments feature ebony handles with deep checkering and sharp steel blades.
Accompanying the kit is an original leather-bound autograph album containing around 100 autographs and sentiments from fellow Philadelphia medical students in 1857, undoubtedly many ended up in the service. We have just begun researching Dr. Cavill and it appears that he was born in 1838 and died in 1890 and is buried in New Jersey, we will update if additional info is garnered. A very attractive set!
