Civil War U.S. Belt Buckle, E. Gaylord - Inventory Number: BEL 416 / SOLD
Non-excavated US 1839 pattern belt buckle. The rear is lead filled with stud style belt hooks behind the ‘S”, commonly referred to as “puppy paws” by collectors. These were typical of early Civil War buckles. This example is maker marked “E. GAYLORD” on the lead fill. Gaylord began independent production in 1856 with his purchase of the Ames Manufacturing Company’s accoutrement department. A very attractive example with a rich, uncleaned bronze patina.
Comes housed in a 6 x 8 inch display case with maroon velvet backing and descriptive card.
