Considered by many as the pinnacle in streamlined design of percussion Colts, the 1862 Police, initially introduced in 1861, was in answer to the clamor for smaller self-defense revolvers. With production running from 1861-1873, around 48,000 Police models were turned out. Small numbers were actually ordered by various police departments of the era and some were purchased during the Civil War by officers for use as a close combat revolver. The .36 caliber, 5-shot Police model is the long barrel version boasting a 6 1/2 inch barrel.
