Columbus Columbus Guard Button - Inventory Number: CON 231 / SOLD

This extremely rare original non-dug Confederate uniform button. The unique highlight of this button is that very few Confederate buttons can be identified as to the actual unit that used them. This is one such button and in addition it is identified to the actual owner--the original organizer of the "Red Jackets"--better known as the "Columbus Guards". Our gallery obtained this button from the Collection of Bill Erquitt whom received it directly from the descendent of the original owner. The entire discovery and identification of these rare buttons is the subject of a well written and definitive article published in a well-known magazine of which this copy is included.  Mr. Bill Erquitt is well known in the Civil War collecting circles and is a researcher and author and has been associated with the Atlanta History center, the Atlanta Civil War Round Table and many other groups and societies dealing with the history of Georgia.

There are fewer of this button known than any other Georgia Confederate militia buttons such as the "Republican Blues and the Irish Jasper Greens"-- all exceedingly rare buttons and greatly cherished by the collecting community. This button is an actual button off an original coat that was in the possession of the ancestors of Mr. Erquitt and was in such terrible condition decades ago that it was destroyed due to insect damage. The buttons were removed and placed on a string and passed down to the present owner and descendent.

Comes housed in 6 inch x 8 inch riker display case with red velvet backing and descriptive card.
