Confederate 1863 Dated Enfield Altered to a Cavalry Carbine - Inventory Number: RIF 185
This .577 caliber Tower Enfield bears the Confederate import marking of “J.S.” and an anchor near the butt plate tang. The weapon has been heavily modified during the war to keep it in service. A hand forged iron strap repair was created to reinforce a break in the wrist and the trigger guard reworked. The barrel has been shortened to 22” long and held fast with a barrel band with a slightly offset “U” marking, likely from a Richmond musket. The stock has a leather ramrod thimble mounted to retain the wooden shotgun rammer with brass finial. The bottom of the stock has an inlet to allow for the use of this wider ram rod. The cheek of the stock has a trefoil carved and inlayed with red wax and is lacking a large inlay on each side, one rectangular and one crescent. There is a series of light initials carved into the surface as well. The hammer screw is also a period replacement. This Frankenstein gun was undoubtedly altered during wartime and would make a great example for a Confederate cavalry exhibit.
