Confederate 3" Broun Shell - Inventory Number: ART 198 / SOLD
This shell is in good fired condition. The iron surfaces are mostly smooth with light scattered pitting that gets a little heavier on the nose. The single bourrelet at the base of the nose is still visible. Part of the wood fuse adapter still remains in the fuse hole but the paper time fuse is long gone. The copper ring sabot had two saw cuts to aid in expansion when fired. Lieutenant Colonel W. L. Broun who took command of the Richmond Arsenal in June of 1863 is considered to be the designer of this type projectile. This is a late war shell that was meant for use in a 3 inch rifle.
