Confederate Tobacco - Inventory Number: CON 256 / SOLD

This is an original tobacco cake that was excavated in 1977 in Richmond. An accompanying letter describes the recovery.

“The tobacco was excavated at the site of the Commissary Office and Storekeeper for the Confederate Government, during the Civil War which lasted from 1861-1865. It was burnt and totally destroyed in the Evacuation Fire of Richmond April 1, 1865. This tobacco was excavated by me during a construction job at 14th and Dock Street- Richmond, Virginia (the same spot where the warehouse stood) in Sept. 1977. Being uncovered by machine it was app. 3 ft. under the ground and all air was cut off keeping the tobacco in a very sound state. When first excavated it was green in color and had a strong tobacco odor. After contact with air it turned dark brown and all odor left. This tobacco was in a layer from 2” to 4” thick in a concentrated area. I believe this tobacco was cut for plug or chewing tobacco. It was stored and never packaged or boxed up. This is one of the best relics I have ever dug in my years of hunting and digging. This is a true piece of history.
