Confederate Wood Drum Canteen Belonged to John Morrison 8th Virginia Cavalry Killed at Point Pleasant W. VA. - Inventory Number: CON 561
A very nice example of a Confederate wooden drum canteen. Produced during the war, this circular specimen is a cedar constructed example with its original cotton strap which has been present since issued. This example was from the collection of Steve Mullinax, noted author of Confederate Belt Plates. The paper label was around inside the canteen with the information: “John Morrison 8th Virginia Cavalry Killed Pt. Pleasant.”
Two circular iron bands, each 3/8” wide, encompass the canteen’s outer edges and secured to itself via a small iron rivet. All three iron sling retention bars are present. Still visible on each face are the circular lathe marks left by the machine cutting tool. In addition, there are several markings lightly carved into the surface that appear to be initials. A very fine example.
