The Comrades of the Battlefield was a Union veterans' organization in competition with the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) with membership mainly comprised of midwestern veterans who had fought in the Western Theater. The Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park preserves the battlefields of both the Battle of Chickamauga and the Siege of Chattanooga. It was the first of the four national military parks, with Shiloh, Gettysburg, and Vicksburg, that were authorized by Congress in 1890. Chickamauga-Chattanooga is the largest and has been used by the War Department for military study as well as memorial.
