Double Telescopes - Inventory Number: MIS 197 / SOLD
Wonderful, rare example of the “double telescope,” or binoculars, similar to the set owned by Thaddeus Sobieski Constantine Lowe, the founder and head of the Aeronautic Corps that provided aerial intelligence to Union commanders, 1861-1863. Covered in checkered leather and constructed of aluminum, the rarest of materials (In the mid-1800s aluminum was more valuable than gold). Wonderful series of 10 lenses, all functional. A great pair with its original leather case with red velvet lining. The interior features a spring-loaded bottom for ease of access. Google professor Lowe's double telescope to see his set in the Smithsonian.
