Early War Canteen - Inventory Number: CAN 095 / SOLD
Wonderful example of this classic soldier’s accoutrement. This example was manufactured at the outbreak of the Civil War by the Philadelphia Depot. The U.S. army initially contracted for 150,000, with a cloth strap and jean cloth woolen cover. The pewter spout had a small hole added to the middle to speed the flow of its contents. The cover bears a nice large ink inscription with the soldier’s name and company, research on going. This canteen would rank in the top ten percent of the Civil War canteens we encounter as it is an early war example, has been carried and remains in very displayable condition and is complete.
