Ellsworth the Martyr - Inventory Number: MIS 055 / SOLD
First Union Officer Killed
Very rare mourning medal for Col. Elmer E. Ellsworth. Circular brass housing with a pair of
original tintype images with a suspension bar of an American eagle in a unique
downward profile clasping the ring within its beak. The pin bar is lacking on the reverse, the
lead solder remains to attest to its placement.
The images are in very good condition. The front retains a strong image of Colonel Ellsworth wearing his hat with “U.S.” insignia. The reverse image reads: “Col. Elmer Ellsworth – The gallant Zouave commander, Martyred for his country at Alexandria, VA May 24th, 1861. Abbott and Co. 143 Nassau St. N.Y.”.
