Equipment Account Book, Company G, 97th Ohio Infantry - Inventory Number: HIS 131 / SOLD

Account book for knapsacks, haversacks, canteens, and shelter tents for Company G. of the 97th Ohio from 1862 to 1864. The book has a ledger for every soldier in the company, where the quartermaster maintained a balance for the issued items listed above. One soldier, Thomas Salisbury, has his knapsack listed as “turned over after his death” from disease in September 1863. Another, Vincent Staggers, has his knapsack listed as “lost in battle of Mission Ridge when killed” on November 25, 1863 to the value of $2.57. The book measures 12” by 7 ½” and is in very good condition despite some soiling and water staining from being in the field for three years. The 97th Ohio was engaged in nearly every major battle of the Army of the Cumberland, from Perryville to Nashville. A fascinating Civil War document from a hard-fighting western theater regiment.
