Excavated crockery mustard container imported from France. The lettering roughly translates to “Maille’s mustard distinguished vinegar makers for the Queen of England and the Emperors of Austria and Russia. Made in Paris.” An identical example is pictured on page 58 of Excavated Artifacts From Battlefields and Campsites of the Civil War 1861-1865 by Stanley Phillips. A luxury good typical of those sold by camp sutlers to Union soldiers.
