Rare Civil War flank marker manufactured from blue silk measuring 23 ½” by 21 ½” with a fringe of gold cloth tassels. The unit designation “2nd Regt. N.Y.S.M.” is painted in gold and red bold lettering.
The flank marker is housed in a heavy, custom-made frame with a silver plaque affixed to the back that reads “This oak frame made from wood of the historic Trostle barn, Gettysburg battlefield 1863 from a N.P.S. Restoration.” An identical example of this flag in pristine condition is currently housed in the New York State Battle Flag Collection. It was captured by Confederate forces at either Bull Run or Petersburg and was reclaimed by Union soldiers and turned over to the War Department. The framed specimen here shows significantly heavier field use. A scarce flank marker from a veteran Civil War regiment that fought at Gettysburg.
