This bold and richly detailed ribbon was issued to a delegate attending the 20th Annual Encampment of the Department of Indiana, Grand Army of the Republic, held in Terre Haute, Indiana, from May 23 to 25, 1898. Held just after the outbreak of the Spanish-American War, this encampment was part of a broader era of patriotic revival and national reflection.
The G.A.R., active from 1866 into the early 20th century, played a key role in Civil War memory, veterans’ advocacy, and public commemoration.
