    General Alexander Hays - Inventory Number: AUT 110

    Alexander Hays was born in Franklin, Pennsylvania on July 8, 1819 and graduated from West Point in 1844. He served in the Mexican War as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 8th Infantry and after distinguishing himself in a battle near Atlixco he resigned his commission. At the outbreak of the Civil War he entered the army as Colonel of the 63rd Pennsylvania Regiment and was given the rank of Captain in the regular army. After his service at Williamsburg and in the Seven Day's Battles he was brevetted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, U. S. A. He was wounded at the Second Battle of Bull Run and for his services there was promoted to Brigadier General of Volunteers. He was wounded again at Chancellorsville and later when the army was reorganized, he was placed in command of the 2 Brigade of Birney's 3rd Division and during that command was killed on May 5, 1864. Because of his gallantry he was brevetted Major General of Volunteers.
