    General Robert E. Lee Section of a Shawl Worn in 1861 - Inventory Number: CON 104 / SOLD

    “Piece of shawl worn by Gen. R.E. Lee in 1861 – was given to the Late Dr. Carter W. Wormley of “Mauskin Lodge” - King William County.

    Dr. Wormley gave it to his granddaughter Mrs. Lucy Wormley Crawford – Who in 1927 gave it to the Virginia Historical Society.”

    The soft wool section measures approx. 6” x6” and is woven of Grey and beige wool.  

    Housed in a conservation frame with archival glass, measuring: 15 ½”  x 31” with an original steel engraving of General Lee – The original tag, and a brass plaque bearing the transcription of the tag.  Also accompanying the fragment is a letter of provenance stating that the “Authentication verified by Dr. James Kelley, Curator, Virginia Historical Society, Museums Collections Dept. with original card file still intact at museum.  It is believed that this piece was later withdrawn, to be available for private purchase.” signed by Bill Yatchman Conservator.
