Gettysburg Monument Dedication Badge for the Statue of General Slocum - Inventory Number: GET 413 / SOLD

A three-piece bronze badge consisting of top bar with a spread-winged eagle over “New York” and a middle bar reading “guest.” Suspended from that is the planchet with a wreath border showing the equestrian statue of Slocum on its high base, and the words “Dedication Equestrian Statue of / General Slocum / Sept. 19.20, 1902 / Gettysburg.”

Slocum was a New York native who commanded the 12th Corps and at Gettysburg was also in command of the right wing of the army, composed of the 5th and 12th Corps. He received some criticism for not personally appearing on the field sooner on July 1 and in adhering perhaps too rigidly to the wing structure of command. He nevertheless held the right of the Union line against Ewell’s attacks. He went west with the 12th Corps, eventually commanded the 20th Corps under Sherman, and Sherman’s right wing, the Army of Georgia, on the March to the Sea.

Comes housed in 6 inch x 8 inch riker display case with red velvet backing and descriptive card.
