Exceptionally rare artifact from the American Civil War.  This tin device was used to form the staple food known as "Hardtack".  A flour biscuit which was issued to he Civil War soldier.  This example is tinned steel with lead soldered joints.  It is accompanied by a U.S. disk used to emboss the biscuit.  The cutter measures 3 3/4" x 3 1/2" and produces a cut shape of 3 x 2 3/4.  The "U.S." letters are 1/2 inch tall.  A series of 13 holes are punched.  A very scarce relic of the war, the only opportunity we've had to own one in thirty years!
