Hardtack Cutter - Inventory Number: MIS 108 / Sold
Exceptionally rare artifact from the American Civil War. This tin device was used to form the staple food known as "Hardtack". A flour biscuit which was issued to he Civil War soldier. This example is tinned steel with lead soldered joints. It is accompanied by a U.S. disk used to emboss the biscuit. The cutter measures 3 3/4" x 3 1/2" and produces a cut shape of 3 x 2 3/4. The "U.S." letters are 1/2 inch tall. A series of 13 holes are punched. A very scarce relic of the war, the only opportunity we've had to own one in thirty years!
