Hathaway Patent Writing Kit Identified to Alfred C. Earle 35th Mass. Infantry Killed in Action – Antietam, Maryland - Inventory Number: IDE 256 / SOLD
A historic identified example of a soldier’s classic lightweight portable writing desk. This example bears the original ink stenciled identification of “A.C. Earle, Roxbury, Mass. – Constructed of nine wood slats which are secured on a rubberized cloth backing, which can be unrolled and locked into a rigid writing surface by a pair of pivoting slats and brass brackets. The rubberized cloth extends beyond this slightly to wrap around and close a tin cylinder which measures approximately 8" long and 1 5/8" in diameter, which is open along one side and was designed to hold an inkwell, pens, paper, envelopes, etc. The Hathaway patent date of December 24, 1861, is stamped on one of the slats. The other reads: Pat. Applied For”. Contains the correct traveling glass inkwell and a pen.
A historic documented example from a soldier who undoubtedly penned his last letter home upon this relic!
