Howell Cobb was a highly prominent figure in Confederate circles both political and military. In his pre-war career Georgian Cobb served as Governor, Congressman (1849-51 Speaker of the House), and Secretary of Treasury during the Buchanan administration. On the Confederate side he served as presiding officer of the Montgomery convention and member of the Confederate Provisional assembly before becoming a Confederate Brigadier; later serving as Confederate commander of the Georgia district, mediating disputes between Governor Brown and the Davis administration.
