    Huge Veterans Canteen from the John A. Andrew Post 15 Dept. of Mass. G.A.R. which was Organized in 1867 - Inventory Number: VET 315 / SOLD

    The canteen Measures a whopping 13” in diameter and 3.5” thick.  Formed to resemble the 1858 smoothside canteen the spout is the identical rolled design with original cork stopper.  The body retains three sling retention loops and a leather strap for hanging.  The top shoulder of the canteen bears the painted name of: “F. Fitzmeyer” who was either the maker or associated with this post.  A great hand-painted veteran’s item.

    John Albion Andrew ( May 31 , 1818 – October 30 , 1867 ) was a U.S. political figure . He served as the Governor of Massachusetts between 1861 and 1866 during the tumultuous American Civil War . He was a guiding force behind the creation of some of the first U.S. Army units of black men—including the famed 54th Massachusetts Infantry.
