    Identified Snuff Box - Inventory Number: IDE 079 / Sold

     Exquisite example of a Civil War snuff box with military motif and jeweler’s inscription. Solid silver example with a bold stamping: “Parker’s Patented -   January 24th, 1860”.

    Throughout the Civil War snuff production boomed.  It was even recommended by doctors as a general cure-all, particularly effective in the treatment of coughs, colds, and headaches.  Many soldiers carried snuff in their haversacks.

    This example is engraved on the base “M. Swarts”.  Matthias Swarts enlisted at 26 years old on 7/2/1862 as a Corporal.  On 9/12/1862. He was mustered into Co. "A" 118th Ohio Infantry.  He was   promoted to Sergt. 1/1/1865 and mustered out on 6/24/1865 at Salisbury, NC.
