    Isaac Ferdinand Quinby - Inventory Number: AUT 117

    Isaac Ferdinand Quinby was born near Morristown, New Jersey on January 29, 1821 and was graduated from West Point in 1843. He served from 1845 to 1847 as assistant professor at West Point before engaging in the Mexican War. In 1852 he resigned his commission and was, until the Civil War, professor of mathematics and natural and experimental philosophy at the University of Rochester in New York. On May 14, 1861 he became Colonel of the 13" New York Infantry and on March 17, 1862 was appointed Brigadier General of Volunteers where he took part in the Mississippi Campaign. He was later ordered home on sick leave but returned to command after hearing of Grant's proposed attack on Vicksburg. After his engagement at Champion's Hill on May 16" and the assaults on Vicksburg May 19th through 22d he went on a leave of absence because of failing health. Although he came back to service he resigned his commission on December 315. He died in Rochester, New York on September 18, 1891.
