Parker Patent Civil War Oval Tin Snuff Container - Patented 1860, convex top and bottom, with soldered seam construction. Measures approximately 3 1/8" x 2 1/8". Retains most of the original jappaned finish and interior is in good condition. Patent date die stamped on front, "PAT.d Jan 24, 1860 / J. Parker". Throughout the Civil War snuff production boomed. It was even recommended by doctors as a general cure-all, particularly effective in the treatment of coughs, colds, and headaches. Many soldiers carried snuff in their haversacks.
