John McAllister Schofield - Inventory Number: AUT 116
John McAllister Schofield was born in Chautaugua County, New York and graduated from West Point in 1853. From April 20 to May 13, 1863 General Schofield commanded the 3rd Division of the 14th
Army Corps and was later assigned to the command of the Department of the Missouri. On August 13, 1888 he was appointed by President Cleveland to command the U. S. Army, with headquarters in Washington, D. C. a position that he held until he retired in 1895 with the rank of Lieutenant General. He died in St. Augustine, Florida on March 4, 1906.
