    The Last Full Measure Death of a Soldier Letter

    July 20, 1862 

    Written by John M. Cook informing his brother and sister of the death of a soldier named Martin while in the Battle at Richmond, VA.

    “Martin is dead. He had a ball shot through his right lung on Friday’s battle before Richmond, On Friday night he was put in an ambulance with 3 other me… and drove two days and nights before his wounds were dressed. They then were put aboard a ship… he died on board.”

    Written by John M. Cook of the 55th New York Infantry.  The unfortunate cost of war is captured in detail in this four-page ink letter.

    Dear Brother and Sister under the greatest Afliction That earth could put up on us we wright you A few Lines to let you know
    Martin is Dead He had A Ball shot through his wright Lung on fridays battle be Fore Richmond on Friday Night He was put in An Anvenlance with 3 other men. Wouds 2 lutenants And one Captton And Drove 2 days And Nights before his Wouds ware drest they then Were put Aboard A ship to Be sent to washington he Died on bord before got to Fortress Monro And taken on on shore And buried on old point in virginia We had watcht the papers to see if his Name Was in the list of kild And Wouded And found MS Crook Who whom we did Not take For His At last one of the Wouded came to platzburgh And we went And see him He said when they separated He felt smart that we Next Heard he was dead we have Not heard the date of his Death but we Expect his Record is in heaven Among The Blest we could Not git him home but we Have his fumeral preacht To the Church next sabbath If you can convenyantly Come we should be glad to Have you And stop On and Bring Manerva with you our hope is cut off on Earth but Not from Heaven
