23rd New York Forage Cap - Inventory Number: UNI 010 - SOLD
Union Forage Cap exhibiting original insignia for Co. K, 23rd Regiament. Nice honest forage cap exhibiting the original 5/8" silvered false embroidered letter "K" and 3/8" silvered embroidered number "23". Wool body shows a small amount of moth holes. The visor is constructed of a thick unstitched leather for 2" on one side. Interior is missing the sweatband, but a full blown polished cotton lining is intact.
The cap surfaced in the Waverly New York Area, giving a likely association with the 23rd New York Volunteers who were recruited in that area. The regiment served for two years, seeing action and taking causalities at Second Bull Run, South Mountain, Antietam, and Fredericksburg. Accompanied by letter of provenance.
