Wonderful wooden gavel sourced from a hickory tree on lookout mountain. Souvenirs such as this were popular in the 1880’s from veterans’ groups such as the GAR who’s members had often been photographed there during the war. This example exhibits a raised, hand-carved masonic compass and the ink inscription “Lookout Mt. Tenn.” Popular at lodge meetings and G.A.R. halls for conducting of organizational meetings, this example shows slight signs of use on the mallet heads. Neat piece of masonic and civil war history.
