    Manual of Bayonet Exercise Identified to George F. Noyes Staff Officer under General Abner Doubleday  - Inventory Number: HIS 128 / SOLD

    Manual of Bayonet Exercise: Prepared for the Use of the Army of the United States by George B. McClellan. McClellan originally published this work in 1852, based on a French fencing manual. This copy was published in Philadelphia by J.B. Lippincott & Co. The manual is 118 pages with 24 illustrative plates and is hardbound in green cloth with embossed eagles on front and back. The front page is inscribed in ink “Capt. Geo. F. Noyes/ on Gen. Doubleday’s Staff/ Camp offc. Fredericksburg, VA.” Noyes was a Lawyer from Portland, Maine and California that served on Abner Doubleday’s staff as captain of the Commissary Department. Noyes went on to write The Bivouac and the Battlefield: or, Campaign Sketches in Virginia and Maryland in 1863. The inside of the front cover has a label from the Military Order of the loyal Legion of the United States, Library of Commandery of the State of Maine, Presented by Companion Edward D. Noyes, April 1893. A classic Civil War manual from a prominent staff officer.
