Marine Shoulder Scales - Inventory Number: INS 229 / SOLD
Manufactured by Horstman of Philadelphia, these slightly larger examples were issued to the U.S.M.C. during the war. Regiments as the 1st Marine Heavy Artillery, which joined Grant as infantry in the 1864 campaigns, wore shoulder scales to ward of the blows of sabers by cavalrymen. The solider carved his initials into the underside of the devices.
